Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of The Hip-Hop Generation

Jeff Chang. "Can't stop won't stop: A history of the hip-hop generation." Web. Google Scholar. books.google.com

The culture of hip-hop grew up in four elements: DJ, rappers, breakdancers, and graffiti artist. Jeff thought there was more to it and talked about how it all started. In the 1970s, The Bronx, the ghetto where people lived with police brutality, bankruptcy, and city budget cuts.  People were run out of their house, so that they can build new stores but were just left with empty lots. Many people try to put an end to this, but their voices weren't loud enough. A brief information about jamaica was dropped and reggae music was made into music for protest. Dj's threw block parties where locals and gang members came to join and take back their city. Chang also focuses a lot on breakdancing and graffiti. Both breakdancers and graffiti artist try to use their skills to get control of their neighborhoods and scare away police. Chang says, the reggae sound helped set the stage for hip-hop. Hip-hop made a huge impact with their lyrical content and huge protest shows. He also interviewed many music artist from now that were there during that age or had family that were there. All four elements help many people and they used them as their voices to be heard.
