How to Progress From a Rape-Supportive Culture
By: Cook, Sarah Gibbard
Rape is being considered a norm in today's society because of rape culture. The victims/survivors have been told that it is their fault. In this article it discusses how rape is being made fun, not taken seriously , and blamed on the victim. It mostly focuses on campus rape due to all the fraternity parties. It says that "they think it's OK if the victim is drunk or unconscious". Men are taught that they're suppose to be aggressive and not show much emotion. In today's society men treat women as objects not as another human being. Instead of feeling remorse for their actions they turn it around and make the victim feel is to blame. Women are being asked "what were you wearing?" "where you drinking?" as if that makes it okay for what happened to them. The coordinator and a director from different universities have created programs to help prevent campus rape and help those who have survived rape. They have asked for both men and women to speak up and not become a bystander when this crime occurs.
Pandora's Project
Pandora's project was created in 1999. It was founded by Shannon who was influenced by Tori Amos who is a sexual violence survivor and also the founder of RAINN. Pandora's project is a non-profit organization where it is staffed by volunteers. Their mission is to support and offer assistance to men and women survivors of sexual violence. This organization offers a message room and chat room, free lending library, and several articles and resources. In their online community "Pandora's Aquarium" is a place where rape and sexual survivors can tell their stories and learn that they are not alone and there is hope. They hope to help survivors heal from this situation and give helpful resources to those who can not afford them.
