Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of The Hip-Hop Generation

Jeff Chang. "Can't stop won't stop: A history of the hip-hop generation." Web. Google Scholar. books.google.com

The culture of hip-hop grew up in four elements: DJ, rappers, breakdancers, and graffiti artist. Jeff thought there was more to it and talked about how it all started. In the 1970s, The Bronx, the ghetto where people lived with police brutality, bankruptcy, and city budget cuts.  People were run out of their house, so that they can build new stores but were just left with empty lots. Many people try to put an end to this, but their voices weren't loud enough. A brief information about jamaica was dropped and reggae music was made into music for protest. Dj's threw block parties where locals and gang members came to join and take back their city. Chang also focuses a lot on breakdancing and graffiti. Both breakdancers and graffiti artist try to use their skills to get control of their neighborhoods and scare away police. Chang says, the reggae sound helped set the stage for hip-hop. Hip-hop made a huge impact with their lyrical content and huge protest shows. He also interviewed many music artist from now that were there during that age or had family that were there. All four elements help many people and they used them as their voices to be heard.

Sample and hold: pop music in the digital age of reproduction

Andrew Goodwin. "Sample and hold: pop music in the digital age of reproduction." Critical Quarterly. Google Scholar. Web. 22 Mar 2016.

Pop music has been evolving production wise and story wise. Pop music was in its time of the writing was in " an age of reproduction" but now is in "digital reproduction". This was noticed when the "Compact Disk" was invented in the music industry. Another thing in Pop music that changed was its background in its style/story which "pops historical movement as progress have withered and died" which unfortunately is becoming more empty sounding in its story. This is shown when " today's pop musician are busy blurring historical and cultural boundaries" which is literally taking out any meaning and hiding the problems of the world out of the music of pop.

Progressive Rock and the Inversion of Musical Values
 John J. Sheinabuam published 2002 pg. 21

Progressive Rock musicians were seen as "war criminals." Critics responded poorly to the 1970's progressive rock bands usually reacting against "the style stemmed countercultural political agenda." progressive rock was seen to have betrayed the "authenticity of rock music for a more "artistic" value. Rock was supposed to be about rebellion "a music that shocks the environment," where as progressive rock is fantasized and poetic lyrics are not targeting the normal rock listeners. In other words "Rock lyrics are not poetic."

Part 1: Rhetorical Situation

1.             Based on your album, find the following information (use at least 2 different sources to gather your information-  don't count wikipedia as one.  Use that as a starting point).  Take extensive notes here.  Use this as a brainstorming and research tool to get as much info related to your album as possible.

1.     Context: Lupe Fiasco’s “The Cool” album was released in 2007. “The Cool picks up right where "Food & Liquor" left off, once again using his Muslim background and Chi-Town sensibilities to inform his perspective without being rigidly bound by either. “ --Rapreviews.com

in a Muslim family on February 17, 1982, Wasalu Muhammad Jaco aka Lupe Fiasco was the fifth child out of nine siblings. His father is an engineer as well as an apt drummer while his mother is a gourmet chef. Little Fiasco was raised in Westside of Chicago and pursued his education at Illinois' Thornton Township High School. Rapping had gone into his head while he was still very young, but gangsta rap was popular during the time that he was intimidated by the profane lyrics produced by the rappers at that time. Thus he gave up rapping as a career choice. ((Culture influence))

However, when he heard Nas' 1996 album, "It Was Written", Fiasco was dumbstruck and instantly attracted to the art of rapping. At 19 years old he had formed a rapping group called Da Pak that were signed by Epic Records and released a single. Unfortunately, the group split up just after they were about to begin but fortunately for Fiasco who chose to go solo after that.

He immediately signed to Arista Records but when chairman and CEO Anthony "L.A." Reid stepped down from the position, he too had to quit from the label. Refusing to stop in the track, Fiasco recorded a number of mixtapes and began uploading them on-line. Soon enough he was a quite popular Internet artist that his work was heard by renown rapper Jay-Z.

His appearance in Mike Shinoda's mixtape "Fort Minor: We Major" landed in the hand of Jay-Z who later on offered Fiasco to join his Roc-A-Fella label. Since Fiasco had already started mixing, releasing singles and gained money from it, he had enough preparation to start his own record label. Thus he turned down the offer from Jay-Z to start 1st and 15th Entertainment which is an imprint of Atlantic Records.

Through his own label, Fiasco released his debut studio album called "Food and Liquor". The album became a major success, gaining as much as four nominations at the 2007 Grammy Awards. Fiasco, by then was acknowledged as one of the rappers who was closely associated to A-listers in Hip-Hop community such as Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Jill Scott. Together with the first two musicians he formed a supergroup called Child Rebel Soldiers who spawned many mixtapes.

He released an album called "The Cool" that proved to be another hit for him through two strong singles called "Dumb

1.             Purpose

1.             Telling his story

So your 2007 album, The Cool, is a concept album right?

Yeah, lightly, though. There are 3 characters. There's The Streets, The Cool and The Game. So there's "The Coolest", there's "Streets on Fire" and there's "Put You On Game" and then there's another record called "The Die" which is the death of The Cool. I thought that the story was so vivid that as opposed to just basically acting all cool and you see me dressed up as the Fonz or something like that.

I think it was more the story of those characters and that resurrected hustler, that sort of personification of street life and the personification of the game. I thought that would be fresh; to make that overriding concept really push.

--Lupe fiasco

Concept[edit]

Lupe Fiasco's The Cool expands on the story Lupe told on the track, "The Cool", from his debut album. Fiasco introduces the characters the Streets and the Game.[5] The album tells the story of the little boy from "He Say, She Say" who grew up without a father, and the people that step in to raise him are the Streets and the Game,[6] with The Streets playing his female love interest and The Game his father.[7] Speaking on the concept Lupe said:

I expand on the story, I introduce two other characters, the Game and the Streets. The Streets is a female. She's like the action personification of the streets, the street life, the call of the streets. The Game is the same way. The Game is the personification of the game. The pimp's game, the hustler's game, the con man's game, whatever. Then they've got supernatural characteristics. Like the Cool, his right hand is rotted away. The only thing that rotted away was his right hand. It represents the rotting away of his righteousness, of his good. And the Streets and the Cool kind of have a love affair going on. So she's represented by this locket. And the locket has a key and it's on fire. And as a gift to the Cool on his rise to fame, she gave him the key. And the key represents the key to the Streets. So she wears a locket around her neck at all times. And the way the story goes, she has given that key to tons of people throughout time. Al Capone, Alexander the Great, whatever. She's giving them the key to the Streets. Fame and fortune — but also the prices. The Game, he's represented by a stripped-down skull, a skull with dice in his eyes and smoke coming out of his mouth. The billowing smoke is actually crack smoke. It's not a full concept album; it's more spread over like five [tracks], really abstractly.[8]

“The thing about hip-hop is that it’s from the underground, ideas from the underbelly, from people who have mostly been locked out, who have not been recognized.” -Russell Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam Recordings - See more at: http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/what-is-hip-hop.shtml#sthash.J96LiU9z.dpuf

Hip-hop started in the South Bronx. Hip hop singers, and break dancing was a way to be heard without violence. It is also said that Hip hop and even graffiti was a way to speak out against putting up the South Bronx express way. Graffiti was intentionally put on the trains so that it would be seen throughout New York. People wanted to be heard.

Part 1:
Original P: “Money equals happiness,” they say.. I find that quite ironic since money is the main reason for a large sum of divorces in the United States, as well as countless other fights people get themselves into over small, flimsy pieces of paper. I will admit the life of those who don’t have to worry about how much money they can spend when they go out to eat or to the mall, seems pretty nice. In fact, that was my life for the first 12 years or so, but I was too young to understand and appreciate it. Money has been a big factor in shaping the person I am today; As I’m sure it has been for just about every other person on this money-centric planet. Even so, I will continue to write about this very “basic” topic and how it has affected me throughout my life.
Simple sentence P: "Money equals happiness" they say. That is ironic because it is the main reason for divorces in the United States. As well many other fights over money. I will admit people who don't have to worry about their money have it good. That good life was my life for the first 12 years. But I was too young to appreciate it. Money has been a big factor in my life. I'm sure money has been a big in everyone's lives. I will continue to write about money. I will tell how it has affected me throughout my life.
Compound sentences P: "Money equals happiness," they say. That is ironic because it is the main reason for divorces in the United States and many other fights over money. I will admit people who don't have to worry about their money have it good. That good life was my life for the first 12 years, but I was too young to appreciate it. Money has been a big factor in my life and I'm sure it has been a big factor in everyone's lives, but I will continue to write about this topic anyways. Also, I will tell how money has affected me throughout my life.
Part 2:
On page 126 of "Writing Identities" the characters talk about how "pretending can be an important part of what we call, invention." Playing different roles, going places and on adventures that the writer has not actually experienced, make for inventions. However the images are the characters on a speed boat going to Metaphor's cave, and it doesn't really go with what they are talking about in these scenes.

1) At an early age my mother became my best friend. I wanted double the love from her because lack of attention from dad. My mother had just raised five kids. She was going through empty nest syndrome. She needed some extra love herself. I asked my mom to take me out of school during lunch. I didn’t want to eat with the kids at school. I never put effort into making friends. I wanted so badly to be accepted by them.  I wanted them to come to me. I spent enough time crying out for attention at home. I didn’t want to do it at school too. I’d rather have lunch with my mom. She would pick me up at 12:15. She would have a packed lunch ready for the both of us. Whatever I wanted to eat she brought. We would find a nice shaded area around the corner of the school to park. We sat in the car. We turned on the radio to Dr. Laura. We would enjoy our lunch. If there was ever a day I didn’t want to go to school my mom was fine with it. She always said “Don’t go, stay home with me."

She would pick me up at 12:15, when lunch began, and she would have a packed lunch ready for the both of us and whatever I wanted to eat, she brought then we would find a nice shaded area around the corner of the school to park and we sat in the car, turned on the radio to Dr. Laura, a therapist who gave callers harsh life advice, and we would enjoy our lunch but if there was ever a day I didn’t want to go to school my mom was fine with it; in fact she always said, “Don’t go, stay home with me.”
Part 2:
The images and words on page 119 express different meanings. The pictures are saying that the way you dress or present yourself says something about you. For example, she states "My students expected me to be formal and respectable." In the picture next to this quote bubble is a picture of her in a dress. If she wears a T-shirt from a Star Trek convention then she will appear as a Star Trek fan; an image of her in a Star Trek tee is shown by this quote. The words are expressing how these things tie into our writing. You create a style that can make it clear to your audience how you want to be represented.

Part 1

1.  The Original Paragraph -
Bam! The news hit me at the end of another school year as a third grader. I was officially going to move to another state. I was really sad because I had made so many friends and had known so many people at my old school because I attended there since preschool. All of this now started a chain of reactions that were later going to shape my personality and mentality. Just the moving experience made me really sad because I had to say goodbye to so many family members and friends. Moving across the country from California to North Carolina was just making me feel really strange and almost depressed which was unusual for a kid.

2. Simple Sentence Paragraph -

P. 119
1. The words were basically being expressed saying that does your appearance really matter in life and if certain clothes give you a higher status that everyone else. The idea that was expressed in the image was exactly the same as it was in the words because it shows them wearing certain outfits that are suppose to give them higher power which clearly not always it does.

Part 1:

Original paragraph:

The first school I attended was a public school in Los Angeles. In my eyes at that time the school was huge and I believed that it went up to the twelfth grade. My mother put me in preschool even though she wanted to keep me at home another year. She would walk my sister and me to school every day. I remember walking up hill looking at the plants people grew and the noise of kids talking and laughing the closer we got.  In the big rectangular classroom I can remember seeing a huge colorful rug on the floor a fake kitchen, some baby dolls, blocks, and other little activities. Outside the classroom we had a play house and big gray jungle gym. Those were the only things I could remember. At first I may have been shy in the class but not too long I was talking to everyone and anyone. I was getting along with everyone and had no problems. We did not only stay in the classroom but go on many “fieldtrips” walking to the dentist, fire station, a local supermarket, the park and other places to get the idea of the places and what people do there. I remained in the school up to the first grade because my dad wanted to own a house of our own (he was renting a house from his grandpa).

Part 2:
Panel 1 page 118            Reading just the text of the panel I would say that it is a superman speaking using the words "my super suit". In the text he is saying that if he wants to present some scientific information he should dress the proper attire to fit his character. Going more into depth he is comparing this to how you should write in different situations. Looking at the picture alone I would see it as a scientist in his lab performing tests with chemicals. The text and the picture obviously explain each other when being used together, but alone they both have different meanings. The text is more specific to where as the picture can lead you to different ideas.
