· PRINCIPLES OF DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE POPULATIONS *

· Drug abusers tend to have a hard time quitting because it is a brain disease that affects the behavior; which needs special and constant treatment depending on how severe the addiction is. They have to carefully focus on the persons age, background, reason of use, and criminal behavior. " Treatment must last long enough to produce stable behavioral changes." In this case they must be in treatment long enough to break their old habits and thinking to prevent them from abusing drugs again. Those who stay in the treatment for a much longer period of time tend to have a better outcome for their future. It is important for staff members to reward their patients at appropriate times to encourage them in participating in the treatment. Medicine is actually required for a few amount of people to help sustain brain function. Overall drug addiction can be cured, it just takes time and following the right path so one will not go back into their addiction.
