Suicide is the third leading cause of death among American youths ages 10-24. Research and media have found that bullying as an environmental stress substantially increases an adolescent risk of suicide and suicidal behaviors.
Bullying is an intentional and repeated aggression that involves taking the power from the victim. 20- 35% of adolescents report of either being a victim, the aggressor or both. Bullying tend to take four forms: Physical, verbal, relational, and more recently cyber. this research has shown that each of these types of experienced bullying increase the adolescents thoughts of suicide.
Although there are several differences between the traditional bullying and cyber bullying, it is perceived different in the eyes of the victims. Cyber bullying often occur outside of the school and in the homes and cyber lives of the victim through text messages and social media networks. No safe place. 10-20% of victims who report being cyber bullied have shown more depressed symptoms and suicidal behavior: self-harm, cutting, drug abuse.
Victimization of bullying has been linked to low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. The constant thought and pain associated with depression and suicidal behavior may then develop into suicidal desire and capability.
