The main argument in this article is that if working women were given equal pay to the men with similar education, work hours and occupation, then there would be less women and families in poverty and it would help to boost the American economy. The authors found their results using the results from the 2010-2012 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic. They found that out the 71% of women work for pay, almost 60% would earn more if they were paid the same as the men with similar schooling and work hours. Also, by paying these women equally to the men in their same professions, the poverty rate for working women would fall from 8.1% to 3.9%. Moreover, in 2010-2012 the United States economy would have made $447.6 billion more if the working women in this country had been paid the same as their male counterparts, this number makes up 2.9% of the GDP for 2012. This numbers are very important because many people act like the gender wage gap, does not matter or exist but in the end when people do the math these numbers are what could reduce poverty in half in the United States.
There is an organization known as the National Committee on Pay Equity, who's purpose is to close the wage gap between women, people of color and men. This organization also believes that by hiring people based on skills, effort, responsibility and working conditions is one main ways to close the gap. This committee was founded in 1979 and is located in Washington D.C; it is run by women's rights and civil rights organizations as well as labor unions, religious associations and simply people who want to see the change in pay equity. There are different members among the organizations for those who endorse and how they are endorsing the organization. Anyone can join this committee and one way people can get involved is by going to the committee's annual 'Equal Pay Day' campaign. They also explain how businesses can do their part by taking steps toward achieving pay equity and by paying attention to their pay practices.
