Drinking and driving is a very dangerous combination. Drivers with high blood alcohol concentration (BAC) are putting not only their lives in danger, but also everyone else's around them. This serious problem leads to preventable injuries and deaths every year. When you allow yourself to drink and drive, you are also allowing yourself to receive; DWI courts, license suspension or revocation, license plate confiscation, vehicles impoundment or vehicle immobilization, enforcement of open container bans, increased penalties for drunk driving, mandated alcohol education, enforcement of seat belt laws, expanded use of Designated Drivers, and much more.
Automatic license revocation and automatic license revocation along with a mandatory jail sentence are the top two reasons as to why drinking and driving has lowered through out the years. As a help to lower the issue, road and vehicle improvements were made. Streets and highways have been made wider, more lights to help with vision, break-away sign posts, and brake lights positioned at eye level, have all been made to help. Future technology include raised lane markers, which are easier to see and also emit a startling sound when a tire wanders over them, and having a similar sound go off to alert drivers when they drive over edges of roads.
The author has a list of new laws that can be enforced such as; restricting nighttime driving by young people, electronically monitoring repeat DWI offenders, and many more. I agree, enforcing more laws can definitely help lower the issue.
Part 2: Finding an Organization
MADDMADD was created on September 5, 1980 by a woman who took a stand against drinking and driving when her daughter was killed by a drunk driver. MADD is the nation’s largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving, drugged driving and underage drinking. MADD also supports drunk and drugged driving victims and survivors at no charge through local MADD victim advocates and our 24-Hour Victim Helpline. MADD's are located all over the country. MADD provides services such as; Supportive Literature, Support groups where you can meet people who are going through the same thing as you, and you can also find MADD's magazines to tell you uplifting stories that victims may want to read. MADD's main goal is to get their voices out there to help lower drinking and driving and to help victims who are in need.
