Step 1: Finding a Social Issue
- Pick a social problem/issue that you are interested in (ex: hunger, poverty, ageism, alcoholism, bullying, spousal abuse... for more examples of contemporary social issues check out:
- Contemporary Social Problems: http://lib.guides.umd.edu/c.php?g=326995&p=2194601
- http://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/toc/ecip0516/2005018778.html
- Find 1 scholarly article that discusses your issue. For scholarly articles use:
- google scholar
- school library database
- Search keywords related to your social issue
- narrow it down by location if you have to (i.e. homelessness in the state of California)
- also make sure to find something from the last 5 years, current
- Find 1 newspaper or magazine article that discusses your issue.
- you can filter your search using the same databases listed above
- Examples: L.A Times, Chicago Tribune, Time Magazine, The Economist, Al Jazeera, The New Yorker, etc.
- Once you select your issue and find both articles, select 1 of your articles to write about. Include the following information:
- link to article
- title of article & author(s)
- 1 page description of the article. In your own words explain:
- Thesis/Main argument
- Supporting evidence that backs up the main point of the article
- the author's conclusion/end results or idea

Check out the left hand side of the database... that is where you can FILTER your search: year, type (scholarly, newspaper, etc.) |
 |
Same goes for Google Scholar... but REMEMBER, google may not have what you are looking for or charge. Our school pays for access, so always try there as well. |
