Violence against transgender people: A review of United States data.
Rebecca L. Stotzer
This article talks about the challenges transgender people face throughout their life, and the three ways this data is found. Self-report surveys, hotline calls and social service reports, and police reports are the possible sources of information about violence towards the transgender community. The Self-report surveys showed how many transgender people been victims of rape. Surveys showed about 50% transgender people reported unwanted sexual activity. Studies have also shown that trans people suffer sexual violence as early teens. Often times these hate crimes are committed out of hatred or not accepting of transgender people. Also, studies found that most times these crimes are done by people within their own household or relatives. These crimes aren't always reported to police, or even voiced by the victims. This really limits the collection of data of the amount of crimes done to transgender victims. Transgender people don’t only suffer from sexual crimes, but also violent crimes. Trans people report being verbally and physically abused, bullied, and beat down. In order for effective laws and policies to be enforced, these sources need to be addressed for improvement, and bring hate crimes against transgender community forward. These data sources need to improve in order to help the transgender community.
